On raconte que Li Yu, dernier souverain du royaume de Chang Tang du Sud, aimait profondément les parfums — mais refusait la fumée entêtante qui aurait troublé le repos de ses nuits. Ainsi serait né un procédé rare : la poire à peau d'oie, infusée dans le bois d'agar. D'anciens carnets de parfumerie, tels que le Chenshi Xiangpu, mentionnent une préparation appelée « l'encens sous la tenture du seigneur de Jiangnan » — poire et bois d'agar cuits à la vapeur, à plusieurs reprises, jusqu'à ce que la douceur du fruit se fonde dans la profondeur boisée.

La « tenture » ne désigne pas un lieu de cérémonie, mais l'espace le plus intime du quotidien ancien. Là, le parfum n'a pas besoin d'éclat — seulement de patience, pour se déployer doucement dans la nuit, entre le col d'un vêtement et le pli d'un rideau. La douceur de la poire, la tiédeur du bois d'agar : rien d'entêtant, seulement une présence discrète et profondément orientale. Ce n'est pas un encens qui veut remplir toute une pièce — c'est un encens qui donne à un espace personnel son propre souffle.

La légende le rattache souvent à Li Yu et à son épouse, la dame Zhou — d'où son autre nom, « l'encens sous la tenture du seigneur de Jiangnan ». Les sources anciennes ne s'accordent pas toujours sur son origine exacte, mais cela n'a jamais empêché cette formule de devenir l'une des plus légendaires de la culture chinoise du parfum. Mille ans plus tard, nous le rallumons — pour laisser la nuit des anciens rejoindre la vôtre.

相传，南唐后主李煜深知爱香之人，却又不愿让浓烈的烟火扰乱夜间的安眠。于是，一种极为特别的香方由此流传——以鹅梨入香，以沉香为骨。古籍《陈氏香谱》中，曾记载"江南李主帐中香"的制法：将鹅梨与沉香等香材反复蒸制，使梨的清甜缓缓渗入沉香之中，再制成香品。

所谓"帐中"，并不是普通的焚香之所。在古人的生活里，帷帐之内是一天最私密、最安静的空间。香气不必张扬，只需在夜色之中缓缓散开，留在衣襟、枕畔与帷幔之间。梨的清甜，沉香的温润——没有浓烈的侵略感，却有一种极其柔和的东方气息。它不是为了让整个房间"变香"，而是为了让一个人的空间，拥有自己的气息。

后世常将这款香与南唐后主李煜及周氏的故事联系在一起，因此又有"江南李主帐中香"之称。关于它究竟由谁创制、为谁调制，史料并不完全一致，但这并不妨碍它成为中国香文化中极富传奇色彩的一款香方。一千年前的人，用梨与沉香创造了一种属于夜晚的气息；一千年后，我们重新点燃它，让古人的夜，来到今天。

Legend holds that Li Yu, the last ruler of the Southern Tang, loved fragrance deeply — yet refused the heavy smoke that might disturb his nights. From this came a rare method: goose-skin pear steeped into agarwood. Old perfumery records, such as the Chenshi Xiangpu, mention a preparation called "the incense beneath the curtain of the Lord of Jiangnan" — pear and agarwood steamed together, again and again, until the fruit's sweetness melted slowly into the wood's deep warmth.

The "curtain" was not a place of ceremony, but the most private space of daily life. There, fragrance needed no grandeur — only patience, to unfold quietly through the night, between a collar and the fold of a drape. The pear's sweetness, the agarwood's warmth: nothing overpowering, only a soft, distinctly Eastern presence. This is not an incense meant to fill a room — it is one meant to give a personal space its own breath.

The story is often linked to Li Yu and his wife, Lady Zhou — hence its other name, "the incense beneath the curtain of the Lord of Jiangnan." Historical sources do not always agree on its exact origin, but that has never stopped it from becoming one of the most legendary formulas in Chinese fragrance culture. A thousand years later, we light it again — to let the nights of the ancients meet yours.
